Abstract

The Dragon Boat Festival is a grand traditional holiday that combines worshiping deities and honoring ancestors, praying for blessings and warding off evil, celebrating with entertainment, and enjoying delicious food. Originating in China, the festival originally began as an ancient ritual in which early communities honored dragon gods through vibrant dragon boat races. According to legend, during the Warring States period, it was the tragic figure Qu Yuan from the state of Chu who, after being wronged, drowned himself by embracing a stone and leaping into the river on this day. Over time, the festival came to be widely celebrated as a memorial to Qu Yuan. In some regions, however, the festival also honors other historical figures such as Wu Zixu, Cao E, and Jie Zitu. The word "Duan" means "beginning" or "start," while "Wu" refers to the scorching summer heat—specifically, the "noon hour," which falls between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., the hottest part of the day. Thus, "Dragon Boat Festival" literally translates to "the festival marking the start of the hottest time of year"—the peak of summer.
